PESHAWAR: After a marathon meeting held between Pakistani and Afghan government officials in Peshawar on Monday, it was decided to deport Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed ‘Afghan Girl’ tomorrow as the court had declared her guilty of living in Pakistan illegally and then acquiring twice the country’s computerised national identity card.
The FIA arrested her on October 26 in Peshawar for possessing a fake Pakistani identity card. On Friday, Judge Farah Jamshed had ordered the deportation of Sharbat Gula and sentenced her to 15 days in jail. She was fined Rs 110,000.
A senior government official on condition of anonymity told The News in Peshawar that Afghan diplomatic authorities deposited Rs110,000 fine on Monday.Pleading anonymity, he said she was supposed to be deported on Monday but some legal issues delayed it till Wednesday.
“Under the law, the federal government is empowered to deport ?someone. Sharbat Gula personally requested that she should be sent back to Afghanistan. The government agreed and decided to deport her on Wednesday,” the official said.
Sharbat Gula is currently under treatment at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), where she is under tight security and is not allowed to speak to the media or discuss her personal matters with doctors, according to Zulfiqar Babakhel, the hospital spokesman.
