Pakistan eye third spot in ICC rankings

KARACHI: Facing a weakened Australian team in UAE, Pakistan have a fair chance to jump to 3rd spot in ICC ODI rankings with a whitewash in the series starting on Wednesday (today) here at the Dubai Sports City Stadium. With a 5-0 clean sweep over second placed Australia, Younis Khan’s men would rise to 3rd spot with 119 rating points – as former would slump to 116 rating points from 123- thus giving its second spot to India who at the moment is placed 3rd with 122 rating points. Australia will face Pakistan without its skipper Ricky Ponting and top players like Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson. Pacer Brett Lee is also not playing in the series due to injury.

Experts believe that Pakistan have the best chance to beat Australia in this series as it is not at its best and top players not be featuring in the tournament. Moreover, the crowd will largely be supporting Pakistan in the series while the weather in UAE is similar to that of Pakistan giving advantage. However, for Australia, which regained second place in the ladder thanks to a victory against South Africa in Johannesburg last Friday, a 5-0 clean sweep would be enough to take it back to the head of affairs, above current leaders South Africa.
