Matt Machan retires from international cricket aged 26

SCOTLAND international and a child-prodigy at Sussex, Matt Machan has announced his retirement from international cricket following a wrist injury.

Machan, aged 26, is struggling with a recurring wrist injury that forced him to take such a decision. Machan represented Scotland in the ICC 2015 World Cup and T20 World Cup 2016. Machan missed out on domestic action for Sussex in the later half of 2016.

He has featured in 36 matches across One-Day and T20 Internationals for Scotland, scoring 1,141 runs with six fifties and one century to his name. He also has 2,089 First-Class runs with 33 half-centuries and 5 centuries.

“It is with great sadness and an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce my retirement from the professional game due to a wrist injury,” Machan said in a statement.

He further added, “Following medical advice, my long-term health is most important to me and I have to take that into account. I believe as a batsman I was only just starting to come into my own and it is a real shame that this has been cut short so early as I believe I had so much still to offer Sussex over the next few years.”
