Jason Roy, Marlon Samuels picked by PSL franchises

Jason Roy was picked up by Lahore Qalandars as a replacement for the injured Dwayne Bravo

DUBAI: The five franchises of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) indulged in a replacement draft for the second edition of the tournament at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. The replacement draft was held to provide franchises with replacements for those players who would be unavailable for the tournament due to various reasons. Jason Roy, who has been in clinical form in the One-Day International series against India with scores of 73, 82 and 65, was pouched by Lahore Qalandars, replacing West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who picked up a hamstring injury in the Big Bash League, where he represented for the Melbourne Renegades. However, Roy will be available only until February 20. The franchise also roped in New South Wales spinner Chris Green and New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin to replace the injured Shaun Tait and Anton Devcich respectively. Karachi United was the only franchise that had all their players available for the season and didn’t seek any replacements, while Islamabad United retained Andre Russell, who picked up a hamstring injury during the BBL, where he played for the Sydney Thunder.

Alex Hales, who had a successful few months for England against Pakistan and then India A but failed to click against India in the ODI series, was ruled out with a hand injury that he picked up in the second ODI. Peshawar Zalmi was also at the receiving end as England was, replacing the opener with Marlon Samuels. They also had Tillakaratne Dilshan replace Shakib Al Hasan, who was unavailable due to other commitments. West Indians Carlos Brathwaite, Rovman Powell and Mohammad Nabi were unavailable for Quetta Gladiators, with Rilee Rossouw, Moeen Ali and Thisara Perera being named replacements. The second edition of the tournament will be played between February 9 and March 7. While the tournament will be played in the United Arab Emirates, the final will be played in Lahore, Pakistan.
