Eight dead in blast outside Lahore’s Data Darbar

LAHORE: At least eight people died and as many as 24 others were injured when an explosion occurred near a police vehicle in Lahore’s Data Darbar on Wednesday morning.

The police’s elite force was made the target of the blast, local media reported. The explosion took place close to police vehicle near Gate 2 of Data Darbar.

Three people killed were policemen. Authorities fear that the death toll may rise. The injured have been shifted to Mayo Hospital.

Rescue teams reached the site of the blast with a heavy convoy of police forces. The nature of the explosion has not yet been ascertained while a rescue operation is currently underway.

Speaking to the media, Punjab Inspector General of Police Arif Nawaz said that the blast was targeted at the police.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has strongly condemned the blast and has sought a report from the authorities. The premier also directed the authorities to provide best possible medical treatment to those injured in the blast.

Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has also canceled his visits to Bhakkar, Sargodha and Sheikhupura. Governor of Punjab Mohammad Sarwar took to his official Twitter handle and condemned the attack.
