LONDON – Oscar-winning Monster actress Charlize Theron and Mulan director Niki Caro are working together on a female surfing movie for Netflix.

Theron is producing the project and Caro is onboard to helm it.

The film is inspired by the New York Times Magazine article, “The Fight For Gender Equality in One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth,” by Daniel Duane, as well as the real-life experiences of competitors Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms and Keala Kennelly.

The Prince of Tides and Seven Years in Tibet scribe Becky Johnston is penning the screenplay.
