LONDON: British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan received death threats and abuses from followers on Instagram after he posted a picture of a Christmas tree that he had set up in his house to surprise his daughter.
Amir Khan is one celebrity who quite regularly posts on Instagram to let fans have a peek inside his world. The boxer who recently reconciled with his wife Faryal Makhdoom, put up the picture of a Christmas tree he had set up to surprise his daughter.
The response he received was quite harsh on Instagram, with some even issuing death threats to the boxer. A few Muslim followers of the boxer chastised him for celebrating the Christian festival. However, others were of the view that since he had put up the tree to delight his daughter, it was a sweet gesture.
‘A Christmas tree for his daughter doesn’t mean that he’s changed religions,’ wrote one Instagram follower.
In an earlier interview, Amir Khan had said that he was proud to claim that he was a Muslim especially in contemporary times when people shied away from acknowledging that.
‘I am not afraid of saying I am a Muslim.
‘I think some people would be scared to say that they are Muslim, especially during the current time, but I am a proud Muslim.
“There are a lot of good Muslims out there who are against terrorism, who are against, you know, people killing each other.”
