DHAKA: Controversies surrounding Miss World Bangladesh 2017, Jannatul Nayeem, led to her being stripped of her crown and title Oct. 4.
After the pageant organizers’ decision, runner-up Jessia Islam was crowned. Islam will represent Bangladesh at Miss World 2017 in China this November.
Pageant rules require contestants to be unmarried.
During the pageant, Nayeem was confronted about marriage rumors, but she denied them.
A Youtube clip and photos of her dressed as a bride surfaced Oct. 2. Nayeem confessed to lying about being married on Facebook Live. The video shows her teary eyed as she explains her father forced her to marry when she was 16, but she ended the marriage after two months.
Before the final decision to strip her of her title, Nayeem told a private TV channel she would return her title if disqualified.
