Khaleel killer gets 15 years

A man found guilty of murdering his girlfriend’s two-year-old son has been jailed for life.

Keith Brown, who was accused of causing fatal head injuries to Khaleel Hussain, will serve at least 15 years behind bars. The child’s mother Samina Kauser, 25, was jailed for three years for not taking steps to protect the toddler.

Brown, 23, called Kauser on 21 October, 2013 when she was walking home from shopping, and minutes later she rang for an ambulance claiming her son had  fallen down stairs, police said. The child, who suffered a serious head injury, was taken to hospital in Birmingham but died the following day. Medical evidence concluded the boy’s injuries were not due to falling down stairs and were probably caused by shaking, which the prosecution said was carried out by Brown. Warwick Crown Court also heard evidence that Khaleel had bleeding into his lungs caused by an earlier incident where Brown smothered him with a duvet, police said. The jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on Brown and Kauser and they were sentenced. Detective Inspector Jim Foy, from West Midlands Police, said: “This was a difficult case as there were no witnesses and no CCTV showing what led to Khaleel’s death. “The police investigation was built on the string of lies told by Brown and Kauser.”
