43 off a single over! New Zealand pair set new List A record

AUCKLAND: Two batsmen in New Zealand have written themselves into the record books by smashing 43 runs from a single over.

The Northern Districts duo of Joe Carter and Brett Hampton set a new List A best against hapless bowler Willem Ludick in the Ford Trophy, the country’s domestic one-day competition.

Hampton began the over with a boundary before pulling two waist-high no balls from Ludick for six.

After clattering another maximum down the ground, Hampton rotated the strike before Carter cleared the ropes from each of the final three deliveries of the over.

In all, the Northern Districts pair collected six sixes, a four, a single and two no balls from Ludick’s final over. The young seamer ended with innings figures of 1-85 from his 10 overs.

List A records show the previous record for runs in a single over to be 39, scored by Elton Chigumbura against Alauddin Babu for Sheikh Jamal in Bangladesh in 2013.

JP Duminy collected 37 from an over bowled by Eddie Leie during Cape Cobras’ game against Knights in Cape Town last season, while Herschelle Gibbs famously hit six sixes for South Africa against the Netherlands in the 2007 World Cup in St Kitts.

Northern Districts made 313 for seven from their allocation of overs on Wednesday, with Carter finishing unbeaten on 102 and Hampton making 95. The two added 178 for the sixth wicket, a Northern Districts record.
